Film Education: a user’s guide was put together by a group of film education agencies known as the Framework for Film Education Group. In 2018, the group was awarded funding by the Creative MEDIA programme of the European Commission to run online and offline training for film educators at all levels, from beginner to lead practitioner. This website began life as a MOOC, or Mass Open Online Course, with UK learning platform FutureLearn. The MOOC materials were translated into a static website by Vanishing Point Creative. The domain name is registered until December 2030.
The Framework Group consists of the British Film Institute (BFI; Mark Reid is the lead contact); the Danish Film Institute (DFI; Charlotte Giese); the Cinémathèque Française (Nathalie Bourgeois); Vision Kino in Germany (Sabine Genz); and The Film Space (Ian Wall).
The course and web materials were put together by teams from these organisations, together with colleagues from Karpos (Greece) and the Moving Image Media Association (Hungary). The training seminars backing the course and website were co-ordinated by the Estonian Film Institute; Meno Avilys (Lithuania); the Slovenian Film Centre and Kinodvor (Slovenia); as well as Karpos (with the Greek Film Centre) and MIMEA (with the Hungarian Film Centre).
In devising the Framework project and its materials we took invaluable advice from the Cineteca Italiano in Milan; A Bao A Qu in Barcelona; the University of the Algarve; and the Cinémathèque Royale de Belgique. We were also supported by the European Film Agencies Directors (EFADs), especially Claus Noer Hjorth, Chair of the EFAD Film Education Working Group, and Julie-Jean Regnault, EFAD Secretary General.
Elsewhere in the website, additional materials are acknowledged where appropriate. We are especially grateful to Nuri Jeong for use of her short film Edge of Seventeen, and accompanying stills and sound files.
